FACTS ABOUT BURNING CALORIES
05.25.2007

Weight loss depends on burning as many calories as possible each day. There are a number of factors that effect how well your body uses calories for energy. The total number of calories a person can burn in a day depends on some things that can be controlled fairly easily and other things that are not as easy to control. For example, you can control what you eat, how much you eat, and how much you exercise fairly easily. It is not as easy to control metabolic function and which fuel your cells use for energy. While the last two factors may be harder to be control, they are not impossible to control. In order to see what you can do about them, consider these basic facts about burning calories:

  • Work burns calories. Hard work burns more calories.
  • Movement burns calories. Faster movement burns more calories.
  • If two people are doing the same activity at the same intensity for the same amount of time, the one who weighs more burns more calories than the one who weighs less.
  • Muscle burns calories at a faster rate than fat, so if you increase your muscle mass, you will burn calories more efficiently.
  • The more fit you are, the more efficiently you will burn calories while exercising.

All of these facts are interrelated. The more you move, the harder you work, and the harder you work, the more you move. Calories are burned when muscle cells contract. The harder an action is, the more muscle cells you will need to contract, and the more calories you will burn. When you are doing something simple that does not require a lot of effort, you don’t need as many muscle cells, and you won’t burn as many calories. If you want to burn more calories, you need to do things that require more muscle, and the more muscle you have, the more of those things you can do! If you push yourself a little harder, you will build more muscle, get fitter, and become even more efficient at burning calories.

The principles above work best for people with the mesomorph body type. Of the three types (ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph), the mesomorph tends to have the highest percentage of lean muscle mass. While you cannot choose your body type, you can achieve a higher percentage of body fat with the right training so that your body will perform like a mesomorph when it comes to efficient use of calories and fat burning. To accomplish this, you need to do anaerobic exercise, the type of training that can effectively improve your body composition and fat burning efficiency. The definition of anaerobic is without oxygen. Anaerobic exercise is the kind performed in quick spurts of effort, such as weight lifting and sprinting. It’s all about building muscle to increase metabolism. Fitness expert Tom Venuto has taught thousands of people all over the world how to use the principles of anaerobic exercise to increase metabolic function. Tom has only 3.7% body fat!

Before you begin a program of anaerobic exercise, make sure to talk to your doctor to be sure your health is good enough to undertake an exercise program. Remember that effective training must be done safely. If you go out and force yourself to do more exercise than your body is ready to handle, you risk injury and frustration. It is important to pace yourself and increase intensity gradually to avoid injury and burnout. Also be sure that your body is sufficiently warmed up before exercising for a long period of time or performing intense exercises.
